Dragging a .cube file into DaVinci Resolve doesn't do anything. No prompt, no error, nothing happens, and that trips up more people than it should. Resolve isn't like a font or a plugin that installs itself the moment you drop it somewhere. It needs to be told exactly where to look, and until it's been told, the LUT you just downloaded is sitting on your hard drive doing absolutely nothing for your footage.
That's not a bug. Resolve treats LUTs as a registered resource, not a loose file, which means there's a real install step between "I have this file" and "I can use this file." Once you've done it correctly, though, it takes about thirty seconds every time after.
Two Ways to Actually Install a LUT
The official route runs through Project Settings. Click the gear icon in the bottom-right corner, or press Shift and 9, and open the Color Management tab. Scroll to the Lookup Tables section and click Open LUT Folder. This opens the actual folder Resolve is reading from, which matters more than it sounds, because it sidesteps any confusion about where your specific install actually keeps things.
Drop your .cube files into that folder. Naming a subfolder something like "Film Emulation" or "Camera Profiles" is worth doing here, since Resolve mirrors your folder structure inside its own LUT browser. Back in Resolve, click Update Lists in that same section, then save. Head to the Color page, open the LUTs tab in the top-left toolbar, and your new LUT should be sitting there. If it isn't, right-click anywhere in the browser and choose Refresh before you assume something went wrong.
The second method skips moving files entirely. Go to DaVinci Resolve, then Preferences, then System, then General, and add an external folder directly to the LUT locations list. This is the better option if you keep a shared LUT library on another drive or reinstall Resolve often, since your files never move and Resolve just points at wherever they already live.
One thing worth knowing up front: this works identically whether you're on the free version or DaVinci Resolve Studio. LUT installation and use isn't a paid feature. If you're on the free version and a tutorial tells you otherwise, it's wrong.
Applying the LUT Without Baking It In
Installing a LUT and applying it are two different steps, and the second one matters for how much control you keep. In the Color page's Node Editor, right-click and add a serial node dedicated to the LUT. Right-click that node, choose 3D LUT, and pick yours from the list, or just drag it from the LUT browser straight onto the node.
Putting the LUT on its own node, rather than baking it onto the clip or the whole timeline, keeps it adjustable. If the look reads too strong, especially on skin tones, open that node's Key tab and pull down Key Output Gain to blend the LUT's intensity back toward the image underneath it. You can also toggle the node on and off entirely to compare, which is the fastest way to tell whether a LUT is actually helping or just covering for a correction you haven't done yet.
Correct the image first. Exposure, white balance, basic contrast, before the creative LUT goes anywhere near the node graph. A LUT doesn't fix a bad base image, it amplifies whatever's already there, good or bad.
The Mistakes That Waste the Most Time
Forgetting to click Update Lists or Refresh is the single most common issue. The file is sitting in the right folder and Resolve still won't show it, simply because nobody told the browser to look again.
Color space mismatch is the second. A creative LUT built for a standard display space applied straight onto log or RAW footage tends to look blown out or strangely flat, because the footage was never in the color space the LUT expects. Normalize first, with a Color Space Transform or the correct technical conversion, then apply the creative look on top.
The third is confusing 1D and 3D LUTs. A 1D LUT adjusts each color channel on its own, which is fine for contrast and gamma but can't shift hue. A 3D LUT maps color across all three dimensions at once, which is why nearly every cinematic or film-emulation LUT you'll ever download is 3D. If a "creative" LUT looks flat and lifeless no matter what you do to it, check which type you actually installed.
And if you're on a Mac App Store install specifically, your LUT folder lives inside a sandboxed path that isn't the one most tutorials describe. Always use Open LUT Folder rather than typing a path from memory, it shows you where your specific install is actually looking.
