Overexpose S-Log3 on purpose, and the image on your monitor looks ruined. That's the first mistake people make with Sony LUTs, and it isn't really a mistake at all. Sony's log profiles are built to look wrong on a screen and right in the grade. If you're judging exposure by the picture on your monitor, you're measuring the wrong thing.
Why Sony's Flat Footage Looks Wrong (It Isn't)
S-Log2 and S-Log3 are logarithmic gamma curves, not picture styles. A standard profile compresses footage into a contrasty, ready-to-watch image. Log spreads tonal information across the full range the sensor captured instead. The result looks gray, low-contrast, and flat. That flatness is the point. It holds onto highlight and shadow detail a normal profile would have already thrown away. You get to shape that later instead of living with whatever the camera decided on its own.
That tradeoff only pays off if you actually grade the footage afterward. Log left ungraded looks worse than a standard profile, not better. That's why so many people try S-Log once, hate the results, and never touch it again. The flat image isn't the finished shot. It's raw material, and it was never supposed to look good on its own.
S-Log2 vs. S-Log3: Which One's Actually on Your Card
Sony recommends S-Log3 for most shooting today, and current DaVinci Resolve versions support it directly. Set Input Color Space to Sony S-Log3, and Input Color Space Gamut to Sony S-Gamut3.Cine. Resolve already knows how to interpret the footage correctly from there. S-Gamut3.Cine is the version Sony recommends over the base S-Gamut3 for most work. It grades more predictably and plays nicer with standard color tools.
S-Log2 is older, and it isn't built into Resolve's color space menu the same way. You have to track down and manually install the right S-Log2 LUT yourself. That's one extra step people skip, until something looks wrong later. Some shooters still prefer it for scenes with very bright highlights, where its curve holds on to a bit more control at the top end. For everything else, S-Log3 is the more practical default, mainly because the software support is already built in.
Whichever one you're using, confirm it against your specific camera before you shoot anything that matters. Sony's log implementation and available gamuts vary a little by model. Mixing up which curve a clip was actually shot in is one of the fastest ways to grade it wrong from the start.
The Exposure Mistake That Ruins Otherwise-Good S-Log Footage
Here's where most of the damage happens. S-Log3 needs more exposure than a standard profile to place its midtones correctly. That means the image on your monitor looks blown out and washed out at the same time, even when your exposure is technically right. Correct for what your eyes are telling you instead of trusting a waveform or histogram, and you'll underexpose the shot. You lose the shadow detail S-Log3 was supposed to protect in the first place.
A few other habits make this worse. Leaving white balance on auto while you're manually controlling exposure adds a variable you don't need. A shifting white balance makes consistent grading across a scene much harder. Skipping ND filters in bright daylight is another one. Log gives you more dynamic range, not infinite range, and blown highlights in S-Log3 are just as unrecoverable as they are in any other profile.
One habit fixes more of this than any single setting does. Shoot a gray card or color reference chart at the start of every scene. It costs ten seconds on set. In exchange, you get an exact, objective target to white balance and expose against later. That beats guessing from a flat preview that was never meant to look right on its own.
From Free Sony LUTs to a Look That's Actually Yours
Sony publishes its own free technical LUTs for converting S-Log3 footage to Rec.709, and they're a legitimate place to start. Loaded as a monitoring LUT on the camera, or applied first in the grade, they get flat log footage into a normal-looking range fast. That's exactly what you want before you start making creative decisions instead of technical ones.
Loading one in DaVinci Resolve takes about ten seconds once you know the steps.
- Select your S-Log3 clip on the Color page.
- Right-click it, choose Clip Attributes, and confirm the Input Color Space and Gamut settings from the section above.
- Open the LUT Gallery, right-click the folder you want, and choose Add LUT to bring in Sony's file or one of your own.
- Drag it onto your first node, then keep grading on top of it rather than treating it as a finished answer.
A technical conversion LUT is a floor, not a finished look. It tells you what the footage is, not what it should feel like. Every clip run through the same downloaded Sony LUT tends to land in roughly the same place. Two projects that need to look different from each other run into that ceiling fast.
